Alta Opal Wolfenberger celebrated her 107th birthday on October 27, 2014 and passed from this life in her home on December 20. Born in 1907 in the Zion Hill Community, Parker County, she was the oldest child of G. C. and Etta Boecker. She lived most of her life close to where she was born and died, on the family farm.
Alta began grade school at Peaster in 1915. The family moved to Oklahoma and West Texas where she and her brother, Roy continued their education.
Returning to Parker County as an adult, Alta married Alvin Wolfenberger on September 21, 1935. Two children were born to that union. Alta became a single parent when it was uncommon to do so, but with determination and courage, she moved forward. She worked outside the home, raised two children, helped on the farm, and assisted her aging parents. In later years she took care of her crippled mother and then her father until their deaths. She also cared for her maternal aunt as long as she was able to do so until her aunt’s death.
Alta had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She attended the Bible Students Group and knew her Bible. Her memory was excellent and could recite Bible verses and beloved hymns until her last days.
Only second to her faith, Alta loved her family dearly. She was always quick to care and assist, no matter what the need. As the family grew, grandchildren spent much time in the summers with her on the farm. She took time playing games, telling stories, teaching ways of the farm, and singing. She taught all five grandchildren to drive. As great grandchildren came along, she would put chores aside and play in the floor teaching games to them. She continued her love of games, playing dominoes until her last days.
Alta and family were very active participants in the Zion Hill Community supporting the Club House and Cemetery Association.
All through her life, Alta loved working as a gardener, raising vegetables and fruits in a spring and fall garden, and tending beds of shrubs and flowering plants. The last year of her life, she actively took part in planning the spring garden with the help of her family.
Alta was an amazing mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend and above all a beloved child of God. Her faith and dedication to God was exemplary. She leaves a wonderful legacy behind for all to model. She was loved and will be truly missed.
She is survived by her son, Bob Wolfenberger (Weatherford); daughter, Lavada Ratzlaff (Weatherford); grandson, Travis Wolfenberger and wife Sherri (Weatherford); granddaughters, Joy Ellis and husband John (Weatherford), Cindy Greene (Greenville, SC), Allyson Murray and husband Michael (Azle), Lea Penny and husband Clifford (Weatherford); 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces and in-laws and cousins.
Memorials can be made to Zion Hill Cemetery Association.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 27 at 11:00 am at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.
