Carol Anne Wood, 92, granddaughter of Salvatore “Sam” Lucchese - founder of the Lucchese Boot Company, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. She was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in Wharton County in El Campo surrounded by the countryside she cherished. Carol's affinity for animals was evident from a young age; she had a pet horse, duck, and dog, and embodied the spirit of a true cowgirl. Her time away from El Campo was spent in San Antonio surrounded by her numerous aunts and uncles of the Lucchese family and the large family gatherings.
Carol held dear to her family and country roots. She was an avid horse lover, adept shooter, and active in various community activities. She pursued her education at the University of Texas in Austin, achieved her Bachelor's Degree, and began a career as a dietitian when she met her future husband.
She shared her youthful expertise by imparting gun safety classes as well as various marksmanship classes. Her passion for border collies shone through as she not only adored them but also excelled as a competitor in dog obedience competitions where her dedication to training and showcasing these dogs knew no bounds.
A mother of three who to her children was a chauffeur, carpooler, counselor, swim-mom, disciplinarian (more times than her kids deservingly care to remember), nurse, referee for sibling ‘discussions’ (especially between the sons), teacher of horse riding and shooting, tutor, cheerleader, protector, etc. A woman of many roles and talents.
Carol was preceded in death by her numerous border collies (too many to name); as well as her husband of 49 years, Dr. Gene Wood; mother, Frances (Lucchese) Hall; and father, Charles Edward Hall.
She is survived by her border collie, Belle; her son and daughter-in-law, William Wood and Donna Harrison; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Rev. Dr. Art Torpy; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Steven and Stacey Wood; and her beloved grandchildren, Reilly Keating-Wood, Wil Torpy, Abigail Torpy, Zoe Wood, Amy Wood, and Reese Wood.
In reflecting on Carol’s life journey - marked by her love for animals, dedication to marksmanship and canine companionship - we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind and offer our heartfelt condolences to all who were touched by her vibrant spirit. May she rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter in her memory to support all four-legged friends was her wish.
