D. F. Lewis, Jr. passed away at home with his family, Thursday, June 6, 2013. D.F. was born March 14, 1931, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to Opal and D.F. Lewis, Sr. He was raised on the Crow Flat Desert.
As a young boy D.F. loved fishing. He would keep all the fish caught each day for a family fish fry. As he grew older he learned to keep only the big fish to fry and turn the small ones back. When he began fishing for fun he released all fish with a kiss and the words “go grow big you rascal.” So if ever you catch a big lunker and it puckers for a kiss you know the rest of the story.
As a boy on the family ranch, D.F. learned the importance of two things; branding cattle and the radio. It wasn’t long before his initials appeared carved into the cabinet of the family radio. No one ever complained. Around that same time his initials appeared on the federal marker at the Texas New Mexico border. Things needed to be branded. He loved spending time with family and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Minerva; daughter, Lea Lewis; son, Ed Lewis and wife, Paula all of Weatherford; two grandchildren, Megan Lewis and Katy Lewis of Houston; a large extended family and numerous friends.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m., in Cienega Cemetery, in Otero County, New Mexico.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch. Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
