Feisty, gentle, handsome with twinkling blue eyes, spectacular child of God. This is a true description of David Walton Childers, Sr., who went to be with his Lord on Tues., July 7, 2015, in a Gainesville, GA. hospital. David and his devoted wife, Mattie Lee, have lived in Weatherford, TX for the past 18 yrs. His loving heart and knack of touching other lives and caring for their needs, was apparent in everything he did. David loved life, he loved his wife and children, and he loved his Church and Hospital families.
David came into this world on December 3, 1931, the sixth of ten children born to Oscar & Annie Childers of Ding Dong, TX near Killeen. He was preceded in death by his parents, 9 siblings & 2 grandchildren.
David had 3 children in a previous 40 yr. marriage to Mary Goble. He gained 4 additional children when he married Mattie Lee Myers in 1996. David & Lee were married in Calvary Baptist Church, Weatherford, and have been members of Calvary since then. He was an Ordained Deacon at Calvary and was there every time the doors opened, if he was physically well enough to attend. This was one of his greatest joys.
Over the years together, David & Lee have accumulated 30 Grandchildren, 39 Great-Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great-Grands. They had just completed a 2 month trip to the East Coast, where they visited children, grandchildren, plus met all the great-grands - many for the first time, who lived in that direction. During that time David fulfilled many things on his "Bucket List" and was so happy!
David & Lee were also long time members of the Hospital Volunteers and Senior Circle. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion.
David served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. Most of his tour of duty was spent aboard the USS TAYLOR (DD 468), home-ported in Pearl Harbor, HI. His ship was very active in the seas around the Korean borders. He was so proud of his military service and encouraged young people to serve as they grew older.
David will be sorely missed by all those lives he's touched, especially his wife and family. Funeral services will be held at his family gravesite in Sharp Cemetery, Killeen, Texas at 12:00 noon on Sat. July 18, 2015. Directions to Sharp are as follows: From Killeen, take State Hwy. 195 S about 12.25 miles, then go West on Sharp Cemetery country road about 2.5 miles.
