A TRIBUTE
I. BEGINNING | Born in Fort Worth, Texas, December 17, 1943
Dennis spent much of his adolescence in Lajitas and the greater part of Big Bend, Texas with his grandparents. He proudly claimed the roots of a true cowboy at an early age. He attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas on a bull riding scholarship, with a focus on a degree in Geology. He eventually moseyed his way back to Fort Worth.
II. LOVE STORY | Dennis met his future wife, Sherry in Fort Worth in 1972
Dennis and Sherry met after attending the same neighborhood party. Sherry had recently had a dream that she would meet a cowboy, and marry him. After a few months of dating, he showed up without a ring in hand, or a proposal plan, and simply asked if she would be his wife.
Dennis and Sherry became husband and wife, and the love of each other’s lives December 15, 1972.
III. FAMILY | Dennis became a father to John, born Feb. 1974, and Michelle, Jan. 1978
Dennis never quite planned or thought about children prior to getting married. However, God had different plans for him. He became “daddy” to John David, February 10, 1974, and Michelle Leigh, January 3, 1978. Later, he became “poppie” to Taylor Paige Word, Michelle’s daughter, on March 27, 2006.
CHURCH & COMMUNITY
Dennis was always very involved in his church and community. Westridge Baptist Church was the first church home to the family. He was very active with the senior high youth group; leading Sunday School classes, and hauling the students on annual ski trips from Texas to Colorado, and New Mexico.
Dennis and the family moved to Weatherford, Texas in 1987 where they soon became members of Peaster Baptist Church. Once again becoming involved with their church community, they participated in the youth group, and led a singles church group.
MILITARY & MOTORCYCLES
Dennis spent 28 years in the military in both the Army Reserves, and the National Guard. He was deployed during Desert Storm to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in 1991. He retired from service in November of 1993.
In the latter part of his life, Dennis found a true passion in riding motorcycles. He spent endless days riding in the open air through the Texas Hill Country, always on a search for the best piece of pie, or banana pudding. He was a devoted member of the Koinonia Riders in Weatherford, a chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA).
Dennis is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sherry, his children, John and Michelle, and granddaughter, Taylor Paige.
