Dorothy Fay (Scruggs) Platt, age 90, a loving wife, mother, Mamaw, and great grandmother went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, June 6, 2016.
Dorothy was born on December 12, 1925, in Rule, Texas. After graduating from Weatherford High School, she attended Weatherford College and was on the Lady Coyote basketball team and chose voice as her major until she met and married the love of her life, Richard “Jelly” Platt on April 10, 1945. In the early years of their marriage, she worked as a telephone operator at the Weatherford telephone office. They soon purchased and worked on their 80 acre dairy farm in Weatherford and began raising their family until Jelly began working for Brown and Root Construction Company, and although they moved to several locations in Texas, they kept the farm and would settle there and build their “dream” home in 1966. Upon returning to Weatherford, Dorothy began working for Brazos Electric Power at Lake Weatherford as a secretary.
Faith and family have always been an important part of Dorothy’s life. She gave her life to Jesus to be her Lord and Savior at the age of 19 and while raising their 3 children, she was always actively involved in the life and ministry of their church. Because of her love for music and singing, she was an active member of the choir at North Side Baptist Church, but also worked with the G.A. and W.M.U. mission programs and taught a ladies Sunday School class for several years as well as serving on many church committees. Dorothy had a genuine love and desire to serve and help others and make everyone feel welcome in her home.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, Richard (Jelly) Platt, her parents, Frank and Fay Scruggs of Haskell, Texas, brother and sister in-law, Charles and Lucy Scruggs, brother, Marlin Scruggs and brother in-law, Pete Wells. She is survived by 1 sister, Frankie Wells, of Leakey, Texas, her 3 children and their spouses, daughter, Kay Mayo and husband Randy of Hamilton, son, Frank Platt and wife Lois of Weatherford, and daughter, Debbie Martin and husband Mike of Weatherford, 10 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Special thanks from Dorothy’s family are extended to all of the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living Community, Encompass Home and Hospice Care, Still Water Continuous Care, and for the many friends and loved ones for all of their love and care for Dorothy.
