Dorothy Jean Vowell Fox

Dorothy Jean Vowell Fox passed away on June 27, 2011, the day after her 57th wedding anniversary. She was born on September 21, 1931 in Weatherford, Texas. Her childhood friends called her “Dorothy,” but after graduating high school as Valedictorian began using her middle name, “Jeanne.” She earned her Associate’s Degree at Weatherford Junior College and went on to varied careers as seamstress, secretary, and homemaker. Jeanne is most widely known as the head bookkeeper/front office manager of the Weatherford Democrat newspaper from 1972 to 1992.  Jeanne was always active in Calvary United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School coordinator, and Board Secretary among other positions. She was also active in her children’s schools and the PTA. Jeanne loved to cook and her recipes are the favorites of her friends and family. Even though she was diagnosed as a diabetic at age 8 and was told she’d never live to be 20, she faced life with enthusiasm, strength and a silly sense of humor. And after having the disease for 71 years, Jeanne was noted for having diabetes the longest duration of anyone in the world.  Jeanne is survived by her husband of 57 years Sam Fox; son Jeff Fox; daughters Jill Byars and husband Mark, and Deana Williams; and grandchildren: Amanda Fox Stockham and husband Braden, Bailee Williams, Zach Williams, Daniel Byars, Steve Byars, Sam Byars, and Matt Byars. Jeanne is also survived by her sister, Deborah Collins, and her niece, Nikki Collins. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Vowell Goodner and Fred Vowell, and a stillborn daughter, Brenda Fox.
Funeral is at 10 am Thursday at Galbreaith-Pickard. Interment is in Memory Gardens immediately following. Visitation is 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, at Galbreaith-Pickard. Instead of flowers, you may make a donation to the charity of your choice.
