Dr. Brad K Stroud, 67, of Weatherford, Texas, passed away February 5, 2023, in the comfort of his home. He was born to Herman and Barbara Stroud on February 15, 1955, in Weatherford where he called home most of his life. Dr. Stroud was a graduate of Weatherford High School, Class of ‘73 where he played football, baseball, ran track, and earned the honor of Mr. WHS his senior year. Dr. Stroud attended Texas A&M University for his undergraduate degree, eventually becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. Brad married Mendee Welker, his wife of 37 years, in 1979. They returned to Weatherford and established Spring Creek Embryo Farms in 1980, which would later be known as Stroud Veterinary Embryo Service.
Brad pioneered the reproductive field of veterinary medicine. He was among the first to incorporate bovine In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), embryo splitting, and non-surgical embryo recovery and transfer methods which would later become industry standard practices. The following are a few of Dr. Stroud’s accolades throughout his illustrious career in bovine veterinary medicine:
● President of the American Embryo Transfer Association (1991)
● President of the International Embryo Transfer Association (1992)
● Schering Plough Embryo Transfer Person of the Year (1994)
● American Embryo Transfer Association Edwin Robertson Lifetime Achievement Award (2019)
● International Embryo Transfer Society Distinguished Service Award (2020)
After long days at work, Brad would take the short walk across the pasture to his home where he and Mendee raised their three children. The saying “work hard, play hard” fully described Brad Stroud.
When at play with his children, Brad’s energy was legendary. A few places he often could be found were on the floor as a “bucking bull”, telling outrageous stories the kids thought were completely true, pitching buckets of baseballs to the boys or spending the weekend on the track or basketball court with his only daughter. He also loved the outdoors and hunting, a passion passed down for many generations of Stroud’s.
Dr. Stroud was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Van Stroud and Barbara Feagin Stroud of Weatherford. He is survived by his daughter Tammy Garner, and husband, Ty; son Todd Stroud, and wife, Bridget; son Chase Stroud, and wife, Lauren; grandchildren Gage and Aubrey Garner, Knox, Crew and Dakota Stroud and Cannon Stroud; his brother Van Stroud, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Dr. Stroud created a legacy as a lifetime learner and was always on the cutting edge of reproductive research and technology. His family would like to continue his legacy by asking, in lieu of flowers, for donations in his memory to be sent to the American Embryo Transfer Association, Research Committee.
Contributions received will go directly to the newly formed AETA Research Award, to fund new and practical research in embryo transfer. To donate, click the link below (non-members can create a login) or send checks directly to AETA, 1800 South Oak St. Suite 100, Champaign, IL 61820-6974.
