They moved to Floyd County when he was very young. When his parents moved to Parker County in 1939, Elmo and his new wife also moved, so they could help on the farm. Elmo was a hard worker all his life. He began working at a young age, helping his father by driving a truck. He also worked as a cowboy on ranches, a carpenter, owned his own truck, worked at Garner School as janitor and bus driver, a welder and a farmer, but most importantly he was a Christian. Elmo became a Christian at the age of 11. He was a deacon at Garner Baptist Church since 1957 and shared his love for God every chance he got. He was also a great storyteller, telling his stories to family and friends in great detail. Elmo was an Army veteran of WWII taking his basic training at Camp Wolters and on his parent’s farm that was used for training maneuvers. Elmo married Evelyn Anderson in 1939 and they raised four children together. They were married 67 years when she went to be with the Lord in 2007. Elmo was preceded in death by his loving wife Evelyn; parents Morris and Sarah Leatherman; brothers, David, Lee, Clarence and Dewey; sister, Myrtle Wiggins and grandson Timothy Alan Leatherman. Survivors are sons, Leonard and wife Sharon of Weatherford, Earnest and wife Martha, Dalton and wife Threasa; daughter, Wanda and husband Tim Lovelace all of Garner; 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, cousins and Garner Baptist Church family and friends.
