Our loving Mother Emma Wynell (Odom) Erwin went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, June 9th. She was 81 years old. Wynell was born August 25th 1931 to J.L. and Cedric Odom at their farmhouse in the Live Oak Community of Palo Pinto County, Texas. In the summer of 1943, she was baptized into Christ at Lipan Church of Christ where they attended. She graduated from Santo High School in 1949. She quickly aspired to a professional career working as a dental hygienist while sharing a room with friends at the Hexagon House apartments in Mineral Wells.
She and her friends attended a revival meeting at North Side Church of Christ, and it was there that Wynell’s aunt Orphie Odom introduced her to a handsome Army Air Force sergeant from Graford, Bob Erwin. Every day thereafter, the two were inseparable and on March 31st 1950 Bob and Wynell were married in the same farmhouse where she was born. They moved to Denton where Wynell attended Texas Women’s University and earned her education degree.
They moved to the farmhouse in 1959 when she began her teaching career at Houston Elementary in the Mineral Wells School District. Bob and Wynell moved to Weatherford in 1963 where she taught fourth grade at Travis Elementary until her retirement. In their customized RV, they went on extended camping trips from Alaska to Mexico, and later, they traveled the world together on cruise ships and tours. On their 50th wedding anniversary, Bob and Wynell renewed their vows in the same farmhouse where they were married, and the same house where she was born.
Wynell was a member of South Main Church of Christ in Weatherford. She loved her families dearly, both her children and extended Christian family and in return, she was loved by many who remembered her as their friend and school teacher. Bob, her beloved husband of 63 years, passed away August 28th 2012.
Wynell is survived by her brother, Eugene Odom and his wife, Billie of Santo, Texas; sister, Carolyn McCarty and her husband Don of Weatherford, Texas and their four children; Bobby Louis Erwin and his wife Jackie of Arlington, Texas, Randall Scott Erwin and his wife Carolyn of Santo, Texas, Laurel Nell DeBord and her husband, Don of Fort Worth, Texas, and Nanette Leah Sullivan and her husband Jon of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, niece, and nephews, and two more on the way.
