Eric Lynn Hassler passed from this life on August 25, 2023, at age 76. Born June 2, 1947, to Lynn M. Hassler and Madolyn P. (Cawyer) Hassler, in Stephenville, Texas; Eric was a wonderful father of two children, Adam Lynn Hassler (Teena) and Somurthai Hayashi of Monterey Park, California; loving Poppers to his grandchildren Ledger and Keira Hassler, and Ashley, Alexis, Natalie, and Brandon Hayashi. Also left to cherish his memory are his brother, David B. Hassler (Norma) of Waco, Texas, and a host of family and friends.
Eric was a linear descendant of a soldier who fought at the Battle of San Jacinto from his mother’s side. From his father’s side he was the great-grandson of Randolph Clark, who with his brother, Addison, founded the frontier school named Add Ran College, which eventually became Texas Christian University. Those two brothers had served the Confederacy in one of the Texas regiments. Eric’s father, Lynn, was in a company of combat engineers in WWII, later deeply involved in the construction of the I-20 Interstate in Parker County and Loop 820. His grandfather, David Medicus Hassler, was a sheriff of Erath County in the 1920’s.
Eric served in the U.S. Navy Construction forces and was assigned to the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5. These forces were known as the fighting Seabees. Eric served as an electrician and achieved the rank of CE2. Eric deployed with NMCB5 to Okinawa and Puerto Rico with the main body of the battalion and served in Thailand with a small detachment group to support the main body deployed to Diego Garcia. Eric returned to civilian life after his distinguished military career. He built a career in the electrical industry. Eric was kind, selfless, fearless, and enjoyed sharing stories and was quick at a joke. He loved his daily walks through town and riding his bike on trails. Eric had a universal blood type and donated to Carter’s every appointment, until he was no longer able too. He loved current events and sports; he proudly supported local sport teams and the Texas Rangers. The Texas Rangers was always the topic of conversation. He owned a local paper The Score. Eric made friends all over the world and will be missed by many.
Services will be held at 3:15 p.m., Friday, October 6th, 2023, at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, Texas 75211.
