George W. Wood, 95 of Weatherford, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011 in the local hospital. George was born on August 5, 1916 on the banks of Salt Creek in Jack County, TX. He was the son of Jessie Wyett and Willie Nora Hardy Wood. He grew up on the family homestead in Jack County being the site of the first log cabin in Jack County. His birth preceded the great depression, the World Wars and the automobile. He was the second child of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, L.T. Wood, James Condy Wood, killed in World War II, and Robert Lee Wood. He was also preceded in death by sisters Leta Wood Williams, Bertha Wood Stephenson Bionisi, and an infant sister Jessie Nora Wood.
George served in the United States Army from 1942-1945, serving during World War II. He married Blanche Marie Rhodes in January of 1947. They were happily married for 65 years and were proud parents of 3 devoted children. Parker County was their home their entire marriage. George retired from the Texas Department of Transportation. He was a cattleman and handyman. He was a devoted husband, father and Pawpaw. He was a man of high moral character and lived his life as an example of it. He knew and was saved by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who blessed him with a long healthy 95 years of life. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche Rhodes Wood, two daughters of Weatherford. Georgia Fae Jennings and husband Ricky Dee; Debra DeBusk and husband Leonard. Also, by his son Ricky Wood and wife Margaret of Cleburne, TX. Grandchildren, Tonya Newberry Watson and husband Jeff of Childress, Chad McBride of Omaha, Nebraska, Cody Wyett Wood of Corinth, April Brim and husband Landon of Fort Worth, Alissa Gibson and husband Matt of Weatherford. Great Grandchildren: Shelly and Brandy Watson, Macey Brim and Preston Gibson. Sisters: Addie Simpson of Weatherford, Lorene Tiechman of Mineral Wells, and brother J.W. Wood of Jacksboro. Also, by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral is scheduled at 10:00 am Saturday, December 10 at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel in Weatherford. Burial will in the Newberry Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, December 9 from 6:00-8:00.
