James “Jim” Hollis Maddux, age 81, died November 25, 2020, at his home in Weatherford, Texas.
Jim Maddux was born February 2, 1939, in Monahans, Texas, to Nora Ranspot Maddux and Bill Bob Maddux. He grew up in Thurber, Texas, with his seven siblings, and attended elementary school in Strawn, Texas. The Maddux family moved to Weatherford, Texas, where Jim attended junior high and high school, and graduated from Weatherford High School in 1957. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Weatherford College.
Jim then proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, at which time he was honorably discharged. He was stationed primarily at Fort Benning, Georgia, serving as a driver and performed general clerical/office duties.
Jim Maddux married Frances Ann Boone on October 31, 1964, at Mingus Baptist Church in Mingus, Texas. They lived in Mingus, and Jim worked in Fort Worth at Fort Worth National Bank. Their first child, James “Jimmy” Edward Maddux, was born on December 28, 1965. The family moved to Weatherford, Texas, and their second child, Frances Michele Maddux, was born on October 12, 1969. Jim continued working at Fort Worth National Bank and began pursuing a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington. Their third child, Nicole Elizabeth Maddux, was born on March 16, 1977. Jim continued working at the bank, eventually becoming the audit manager, all the while pursuing an MBA in finance from the University of Texas at Arlington and becoming a CPA. Jim finished his accounting and auditing career by working for Harris Methodist Health Services and John Peter Smith Hospital before retiring in 2006.
Jim and Frances Maddux have been members of North Side Baptist Church since 1969. They raised their children in the church and both played an active role in the church. Jim served by counting the offering for many years.
Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed gardening, tending to goats and chickens, working crossword puzzles, playing board games, and traveling. His travels took him from the west coast to the east coast, and included one of his dream trips to Hawaii.
Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his wonderful wife of 56 years, his three children and their spouses, and five grandchildren. Of all the titles he held, “Papaw” was the most important. Papaw’s grandkids are Austin Scoggins, age 23, Will Maddux, age 22, Zachary Maddux, age 19, Emma Hagerty, age 15, and Sarah Hagerty, age 11. Jim was very proud of his grandkids and enjoyed spending time with them outdoors and indoors, playing games, throwing the ball, shooting the BB gun, and playing “army.”
Jim Maddux is survived by his wife, Frances Ann Maddux; son and daughter-in-law, James and Donna Maddux of Dallas, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Chris Scoggins of Sharpsburg, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Joe Hagerty of Liberty Hill, Texas; five grandchildren; brother, Tom Maddux; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Owen Falls; and sister-in-law, Elaine Maddux.
