Jerry Don Tanner

November 10, 1939 — November 8, 2014

Jerry Don Tanner, 74, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Jerry was born in the same house as his mother on the T.S. Carroll family farm in Parker County on November 10, 1939, the son of Mary Beth Carroll and William Noah Tanner. He attended Fox School, Millsap, and graduated from Weatherford High School in 1958. He also attended Weatherford College. Jerry married his best friend and the love of his life, Sandra Jo Hasley Tanner, on October 7, 1961, and they recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary.

Jerry worked for Southern Airways in Mineral Wells and was in the 49th Armored Division, Texas National Guard and was called to active duty in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis. The division was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Jerry became a Police Officer for the Arlington Police Department, moved to LTV as a Protection Officer/Fireman, and ended his career as Lieutenant in the Arlington Fire Department, retiring in 1996 after 27 years of service.
Jerry and Sandra lived in Arlington, Texas for 18 years before building a house back in Weatherford on the same homestead where he was born.

Jerry accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and was a member and a teacher in his men's class at North Side Baptist Church. He was the Faith Fund Chairman for the local camp of Gideons International, was active in the Weatherford High School Class of 1958 Alumni group and the Arlington Fire Department retirement association. Jerry enjoyed flying and earned his Flight Instructors License.

Jerry loved the Lord and had a servant’s heart. When he wasn't working helping others as a policeman or fireman, he was often helping someone on his own time. "Papa" Jerry loved his grandchildren and could always be counted on to baby sit and run "Papa's taxi service" and get any grandbaby to any function on time.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Jo Hasley Tanner; son, Tracy Lee Tanner and wife, Marie of Houston, Texas; son, Jerry Christopher Tanner of Dallas; grandchildren: Caitlan Elyse Tanner Wren and husband, Josh Wren; Daniel Jordan Tanner; Andrew Colin Tanner and Kyle Christopher Tanner; uncle, Leon Tanner; brother in law, Michael Truett Hasley and wife, Sharon; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11, at North Side Baptist Church, 910 N Main, Weatherford, Texas. Internment is at Memory Gardens of the Valley. Visitation is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 North Elm St, Weatherford.

The family request donations be made to Gideons International.
