Joan Katherine MacWhirter

Joan Katherine (Dexter) MacWhirter passed away peacefully October 2, 2022. She was 89 years old. Joan was born May 12, 1933, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Joan received her RN degree at Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing. Joan met and married her husband of 68 years, Don, in Toronto. Joan continued her nursing career in Toronto, and Edmonton, Alberta, before settling with Don in Renton, Washington, where they raised their two children, Susan and Bruce. While in Renton, Joan worked at Renton Hospital and in private practice. Don and Joan moved to Weatherford, Texas, where they lived for the past 17 years. Joan enjoyed traveling with family to Colorado and the Oregon and Texas coasts, gardening, baking, and designing ornamental crafts. 

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents, Howard and Katherine Dexter; brother, Lloyd Dexter; and sister, Mary Lou Dexter. 

Joan is survived by her daughter, Susan Overcash (Craig); son, Bruce MacWhirter (Denise); grandchildren, Jacob MacWhirter and Allyson MacWhirter (fiancé, Jack Powers); sister, Ruth Keywood of Ottawa; and her loving dog, Sophie.
