Joe D. Overstreet, 88, a long time Weatherford and Zion Hill community resident, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021, peacefully with his family by his side in the home he built in 1960.
Joe was born in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, in an adobe house on April 16, 1933, to J.W. and Mary Deakins Overstreet. His early years in New Mexico established his love of Turquoise which he proudly showered on the women in his family.
Joe was a Veteran and a patriot of the United States of America, serving in the U.S. Army. Joe married his first love, Levonne Plumlee, in 1957 and lost her to cancer in 1999 after 42 years of marriage. Joe then met Shirley Wooten and fell in love again. They married in 2001 and were married for 20 “fun” years until his death on Sunday.
During the last 20 years of his life, Joe and Shirley had a good time traveling to various casinos in the South and enjoying each other’s company. He retired from General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin in 1991 after 42 years of service. He retired to his passion of farming and ranching with his farm and cattle. He loved the outdoors, hunting fishing and especially raising his cattle. He also enjoyed watching his grandkids in sporting events, basketball, football, baseball, and gymnastics. He was always proud of his grandkids and bragged on them all the time. Joe was a gentle man but also firm in his beliefs. He believed that a transaction could be made with a handshake and that a man’s word was his bond.
Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Levonne Plumlee Overstreet; parents, J.W. and Mary Deakin Overstreet; and brother, Cheseldean Overstreet.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Shirley Wooten Overstreet; daughters, Le Overstreet Kukuk of Colorado, Tracie Thurman and husband, James of Stephenville, Karla Monk and husband, Chris of Aubrey; sons, De Overstreet and wife, Lisa of Weatherford, Kaj Overstreet and wife, Melinda of Sunray; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
A special acknowledgement to long time friends, Bill Knight, Don Smelly, Naomi Patterson, and by his dear cousin, Jimmy Maddox.
