John William Shaffer

John William Shaffer, died at his home in Weatherford, Texas on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. John was born in Urbana, Ohio on March 6, 1924 to Raphael and Lucy Marie Shaffer. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April of 1946, he was injured when the U.S.S. Solar exploded, and he was medically discharged in January of 1947. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and received his Masters Degree in Management Science from TCU in 1974. John was employed at Frigidaire in Dayton, Ohio when he met and married Laurel J. Bullis on June 4, 1950. Together the enjoyed 56 ½ years of marriage prior to her death in January of 2007. They moved to Fort Worth in 1950 and settled in the area now known as Hudson Oaks. John was employed at Convair, later named General Dynamics, and he retired in April of 1989 after 38 years. John was active in his church, Christ the King Episcopal Church in Fort Worth, and he was a charter member of the Oakridge Volunteer Fire Department.   John was preceded in death by his wife, Laurel and a son, Larry.   Survivors include son David J. Shaffer and wife Lisa of Plano, daughter Dr. Kathleen L. Shaffer of Baltimore, Maryland, and Mary Ellen Calloway and husband John of Weatherford. Seven grandchildren, Angela Casey and husband Paul, Scott Shaffer, Steven Shaffer, Lauren Calloway, Jake Calloway, Marc Friedman and Sophia Friedman. Four great-grandchildren, Drew Casey, Aaron Hamilton, Preston Casey, and Karter Casey, brother Carl, sister Jean, Ruth Ann, and Linda and numerous nieces and nephews.   A very special thank you to Dad’s caregivers Renea and Brian Brown and their family. With your help Dad enjoyed his final years with dignity in his own home under your exceptional care. Our family feels so very blessed to have had your family in our lives. Thank you.  Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Christ the King Episcopal Church located at 3290 Lackland Road in Fort Worth, Tx. Interment and committal in East Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford. Visitation will be held 1 hour before the service at the church.
