Kathleen “Kathy” Ann Thompson, age 80, gracefully passed from this life on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Kathy was born on March 28, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Vincent Caufield and Marylou (Krauel) Caufield. Over the years, her childhood name was “Kit,” then she became Mom, Grandma, and finally Mama T.
Kathy was a beacon of kindness and sweetness, the kind of person who could light up any room with her warmth. She believed in the beauty of lifelong relationships and nurtured them with care, remaining close with several of her Sigma Phi Gamma sorority sisters throughout her life. She truly embodied the words of the Girl Scout song Make New Friends: “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That's how long I want to be your friend.”
In her younger years, Kathy devoted herself to recruiting and inspiring volunteers for the Girl Scouts across North Texas. She led day camps, coordinated summer camps, and encouraged young girls to embrace the outdoors and their limitless potential. Her time with the Girl Scouts reflected her love for nature, her belief in community, and her desire to shape future generations.
Later, Kathy brought her talents to the sales industry with San Antonio Shoemakers (SAS), beginning in Hurst, Texas, and eventually transferring to Phoenix, Arizona, where she retired.
After retirement, Kathy cherished her time with her family and found profound meaning in the symbolism of butterflies, a reflection of her own life—a transformation filled with beauty, grace, and resilience. Butterflies became her quiet reminder that life’s fleeting moments hold eternal significance. She also enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, appreciating the comforting stories that mirrored her own tender spirit. Much like her friendships, she believed in making good use of everything - she collected things and didn't throw them away.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Robert Bruce Thompson; parents, Vincent and Marylou Caufield; daughter, Jennifer Hicks; grandson, Justin Thompson; and her sister, Susie Caufield.
She is survived by her loving family, including her daughter, Jean Gunel; son, John Thompson and wife, Rhonda; daughter, Joan Mitchell and husband, Rick; eight adored grandchildren, D. J. Gunel, Steven Gunel, Aaryn Moreland, Ali Rae and husband, Matt, Joshua Thompson and wife, Kellie, Kayla Mitchell, Megan Mitchell, and Sarah Mitchell; four precious great-grandchildren, Helayna Rae, Wayde Rae, Charlotte Moreland, and Austin Moreland; sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Seay and husband, Ken; and her dearest friends, Kristy Smithers and Mary Rigdon.
A memorial service celebrating Kathy’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2024, at The Met Church, 11301 N. Riverside Dr., Fort Worth, Texas 76244.
