Kenneth Box passed on April 3 in Kemp, Texas at the age of 83. He was surrounded by his family. He is survived by his daughters Delann Needham (Rick), Denise Daffron (Drew) and grandsons Kris Needham (Damaris) and Austin Needham.

Kenneth was born August 19, 1939, in Borger, Texas to Loyce and Loretta Fay (Mullins) Box. Kenneth graduated from Borger High School and then went into the Army and then into the Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant. After serving his country, he joined Southwestern Bell and retired and started AB Communications with his wife, Anna. He became known as the “phone man” around Weatherford. Ken was also an Ostrich rancher for many years and had visitors from across the world stop by the ranch to discuss the Ostrich business.

Kenneth was a devout member of North Side Baptist, a dedicated family man and an ardent fisherman. He served as a church deacon and a greeter for over fifty years. He was on the security team and chose “Buzzard 1” as his handle. His favorite times were spent at Padre Island where he would spend hours each day on the beach with Rick, Kris and Austin trying to find bull reds, sharks, and other big fish. They nicknamed themselves “The Padre Pirates”. Days began before sunup catching bait in the flats. After the live wells were full of bait, the Padre Pirates set off down Padre National Sea shore where they would spend hours searching the waters for the ideal spot where the big ones lurked. If you ever visited Ken at home, there was a good chance that you would find him making his custom breakaway weights and tuning his Penn reels for the next Bull Red run. He loved fishing with his boys!!

Padre is a little quieter today and has lost a friend who loved to stop and talk about the best spots. For the security guys at church “Buzzard 1, signing off.”

A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Side Baptist Church Building Fund at https://pushpay.com/g/nsbcweatherford or charity of your choice.
