Letrice “Joyce” Thornton Davis passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, following a lengthy illness. Joyce was married to Travis Davis April 19, 1952, in Hobbs, New Mexico. They were married 64 years, 11 months, and 9 days. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on March 19, 2017, one month early so they could celebrate all month long.
Joyce was born September 19, 1933 to Wallace and Leatrice Thornton at Big Spring, Texas. Joyce was proceeded in death by her parents, one brother, Wallace Thornton, Jr., and one sister, Lucille Shurgart, a daughter, Maria Elane, and a son, Michael Paul, sisters-in-law, Roberta Wright, and Adele Fleming. She is survived by her husband, Travis Davis, a grandson, Ross Farrar, several nieces, a nephew, and numerous relatives, and a host of friends, and wonderful caregivers.
Joyce was an avid gardener, being a member of the Marlin Garden Club for many years. Through her bridge clubs, she and Travis participated in long term groups of endearing friends that they enjoyed for many years. Being very outgoing, Joyce liked to meet people and was very well liked by all her friends, co-workers and students. While Travis was very involved in the Shriners in Waco, Joyce was always by his side, entertaining and enjoying every festivity. Joyce was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Marlin, Texas for many years and became a member of Lakeshore Baptist Church after moving to Weatherford a few years ago. Joyce and Travis had many exciting adventures traveling including going on cruises to Alaska, to the Caribbean many times, Branson, MO, and “wherever the wind blew.”
Joyce had a Master’s Degree in education and dedicated over forty years of her life to the students in public schools, as a teacher, supervisor and diagnostician. She found great satisfaction and joy in helping students, regardless of their special needs, to succeed to their greatest potential.
Joyce’s Celebration of Life will begin with a visitation at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 N. Elm St., Weatherford, TX 76086 on Friday, March 31, at 1p.m., with the funeral service following at 2 in the chapel. Interment will be in the East Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford following the funeral.
