Martha Imogene "Gene" Sneed

April 1, 1928 — February 28, 2021

Martha Imogene “Gene” Sneed, age 92 years and 11 months, left this earth and flew into the arms of Jesus, on February 28, 2021. Gene was a resident of Weatherford since the early 50s. She was a beautician and owned the Beauty Lounge before retiring.

Gene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward; grandson, Austin Sneed; and great grandson, Kevin Morgan; along with her parents, John Lyle Witt and Lela Jennings Witt; and her 11 brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving member of the dirty dozen as the siblings were affectionately named. She was also the last member of her Sneed-Witt generation.

She is survived by her three sons, Mike Sneed and wife, Jackie of Lipan, Pat Sneed and wife, Carrie of Weatherford, and Ricky Sneed of Weatherford. She was Nana to her grandchildren Carrie Lynn Morgan, Angela Flores, Melissa Garrett, Emily Lester and Mark Sneed, and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gene enjoyed life and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and attended regularly until her dementia and mobility prevented her from attending. She was the oldest member of that church. She worked with many beauticians during her life, but she and Ruth Garner were like two peas in a pod and worked together from the mid-60s until they both retired. They enjoyed each other’s company, took trips together and shared many happy times along with the sad times.

Gene and Edward raised three boys to honor and fear the Lord. As parents, they did not spare the rod. They taught their boys to love God, their family, their country, and each other, to respect authority, to work hard and to do what is right. Their legacy of faith, hope and love is a much richer inheritance than fame or bank account balances.

On April 1, 2020, because of the new Covid rules, Gene’s emotional 92nd birthday celebration was held at the front window of Weatherford Healthcare Center with balloons, banners, cupcakes, and candy. In attendance were her sons, grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff and employees at Weatherford Healthcare Center for the wonderful, loving, and compassionate care they provided to Gene over the past 17 months. Even in a Covid environment, the staff was able to provide safety for its residents but also meaningful visits with Gene.

The family and extended family will hold a private funeral service at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, at 2:00 p.m., on March 4, 2021, with interment in East Greenwood Cemetery immediately thereafter. Gene will be available for viewing during business hours of 9am to 5:00 p.m., at Galbreaith Pickard, beginning Tuesday, March 2, 2021. If attending, please keep in mind the CDC recommendations, wear a mask, and practice social distancing.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her memory to Parker County Center of Hope www.centerofhopetx.com 1318 Clear Lake Rd Weatherford, Texas 76086 or Manna Storehouse www.mannastorehouse.org PO Box 9 Weatherford, Texas 76086 or a favorite mission charity.
