Mary "Jackie" Downs

  Jackie was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on November 19, 1931. On December 26, 2024, the Lord called her home. Welcoming her were her husband, Jimmy Downs; parents, Minnie and Frank Hamby, Sr.; brothers, Frank Hamby, Jr. and Charles Hamby; and sisters, Edie Burns, Dorothy Green and Charlotte Mayeux.

  Graduating Byrd High School in 1950 and then Centenary College, she attended Schumpert School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse. Working labor and delivery at Schumpert for several years was her true passion. After that she worked for Dr. Henry Gallagher in private practice until he retired. 

  She was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport until she moved to Weatherford, Texas in 2022 and joined North Side Baptist Church.

  Left to cherish all the wonderful memories with her are her children, Rene’e Downs, Suzanne Carter, David Downs, and Leslie Downs (Sheryl). She was “Nanny” to grandchildren, Tamara Weary (Shawn), Mark Johnson (Rebecca), Michael Johnson (Sarah), Noah Downs, and Isabella Roszelle (Blake); great grandchildren, Carley Pringle (Jason), Lillie Johnson, Dylan and Addison; great-great grandchildren, Raegan, Jacob, Adalynn, and Kase; cousin, Norma Camel; and several nieces and nephews. Also, Shadow, her special kitty cat.

  Jackie loved the outdoors working in her flower beds. Her house was always where everyone gathered for all occasions. There were lots of spirited card games with her sisters.

  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Van Houser officiating, at North Side Baptist Church, 910 N. Main Street, Weatherford, Texas 76086.
