Mary was born to Belton and Dannie (Warden) Copeland on February 26, 1925 in Weatherford, Texas. She started working at the age of 12 doing dishes for a neighbor. As a teenager she worked at Sharp’s Grocery and in a dentist office. At the age of 16 she met her future husband, Alvin Carr, on a blind date. Mary and Alvin were married September 7, 1941. Three days later they left for California.
In 1943 Mary and Alvin returned to Weatherford where Alvin was drafted into WWII. Mary and Alvin celebrated 57 years of marriage. Mary worked for Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Weatherford as Manager. In 1959 she went to Isbell’s Beauty College. She had her own beauty shop in Weatherford for over 15 years before retiring to care for elderly parents. Mary had a passion for children, especially teenagers. Her children’s friends were always welcome. She allowed the neighbor girls to use her beauty shop to learn how to care for their nails and hair. The only requirement she had was that they clean the shop afterward. They always did what was expected. She was also always willing to help a teen in need. Many teens came through her home, some staying months or longer. She loved each and every one of them.
Mary and Alvin loved to travel. They visited at least 30 of the 50 states, as well as Mexico and Canada. After Mary retired she volunteered at Weatherford Health Care teaching ceramics and other crafts. She also taught ceramics to her friends. She worked part time at Tony’s Grocery on Rusk St. Mary loved working for Tony Priest and his family and seeing all her north side friends. Mary was a lifelong member of North Side Baptist Church, where six generations of her family attended.
