Melba Bernice Lewelling Maddux

Melba Bernice Lewelling Maddux, 94, died October 11, 2019, in Weatherford.

She was born in Aspermont, Texas, on September 27, 1925, to Louis and Josie Lee Cox Lewelling. Weatherford became home to the Lewelling family in 1937.

After graduating from Springtown High School, and Texas Business College in Weatherford, Bernice lived in Fort Worth for two years, while teaching at Cozzens Secretarial School and working as a secretary at Ellison’s Furniture Store. In 1944 she returned to Weatherford and worked at First National Bank for 15 years. She married Henry Martin Maddux on February 22, 1946. Bernice left the bank in 1959 to be a fulltime mother to her two daughters. During the 1970’s, she worked part-time as personal secretary to Dr. Joe T. Nelson, and did seasonal tax work for Bassinger & Pickard Accounting Firm.

A freelance writer since 1970, she was published in numerous magazines and newspapers, and authored five books.

Survivors include her husband Henry and two daughters: Carol Greenlee of Weatherford, and Vicki Baum of The Woodlands. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Shane Skiles and wife, Kym of Bedford, Jeffrey Baum and Kaley Baum of The Woodlands.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Tracy Lee Skiles; sister, Carla Johnson; brother, Louis Lewelling, Jr. and sister-in-law, Joyce Lewelling.

She had been a member of the South Main Church of Christ in Weatherford since 1951.
