Melvin L. Simons, 90, of Weatherford went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 3, 2015. He was born on March 6, 1925, to Joe Grant and Clemmie Allen Simons in Buffalo Springs, Texas. He graduated from the Midway School in Clay County. Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 where he served three years in combat as an expert machine gunner in the hard-fought battle for Peleliu Island in 1944 as well as in Okinawa in 1945. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1946. He married Billye Marie Sweatt in Kermit, Texas, on December 9, 1948, where he worked as a rig moving superintendent for C.L. Holder Trucking until moving to Weatherford in 1971. Melvin and Billye owned and operated M&B Transport Trucking until their retirement in 1990. Melvin, also known as “Judge Simons,” served his community as Justice of the Peace of Parker County Precinct #4 from 1998 until 2010. He was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church in Weatherford for 43 years. Billye preceded him in death on November 16, 2014. Melvin is also preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Aron Simons, Coy Simons, Elvin Simons, and Boyce Joe Simons; and sisters, Willa Faye Simons, Monette Wyatt, Fern Jackson, Mourine Seigler, Doris Lippincott, and Celia “Wayne” Harris. Melvin will always be remembered for his sense of humor, faithful servanthood, and the loving care shown to everyone he knew. He is survived by daughters, Patti Clinton and husband, Robert; Sylvia Bowman; son, Terry Simons and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Matthew Bowman; Melody Petree and husband, Danny; Mallorie Hadley and husband, Rick; and Mackenzie Simons; great grandchildren, Dakota Petree, Lily Petree, Eli Petree, and Rylee Hadley. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Whitsitt and husband, Don; and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to give a special thank you to the wonderful staff and residents of Brookdale Senior Living of Weatherford as well as IntegraCare Hospice for the love and support given to Melvin.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at Brazos Trails Cowboy Church, 300 Sharla Smelley Road, in Weatherford, between Weatherford and Peaster.
Interment to follow in the Curtis Cemetery in Weatherford with Military Rites.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday evening, December 7, 2015 at Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 N. Elm Street, in Weatherford.
