Opal Griffith Bowden, 106, passed away June 19, 2014 at home. She was born Mary Opal Dalton on June 19, 1908 in Parker County near the Authon Community; where she lived with her parents and five brothers and three sisters. Opal attended Beauty College in Fort Worth after high school and moved to Weatherford where she owned and operated Opal’s Beauty Shop. As a young lady, Opal married Charlie Griffith and together they had a daughter, Charlene. Charlie was a local business owner and together they built a life together in the community. A lingering and debilitating heart condition, took Charlie away from Opal. Later, Opal married Andy Bowden, another local business owner; they spent many happy years together before Andy passed away.
Opal was a life-long respected member of Central Christian Church in Weatherford. She was a leader of the Christian Women’s Fellowship CWF. Opal’s focus was benevolence, helping those in need throughout the community. She not only led the CWF in this effort, but she personally assisted many families in her years of service. Opal touched many lives. She enjoyed life and shared joy with all who knew her for her quick wit and sense of humor. Opal’s family wishes to thank family, friends and Alpha Omega Hospice.
Opal leaves behind four grandchildren Kristie Armstrong, John Wiggans, Doug Wiggans and wife Sharon, Mark Wiggans and wife Catherine; 7 great grandchildren; and sister Hazel Coalson. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Charlene Wiggans and both husbands.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Central Christian Church in Weatherford. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Benevolence Fund at Central Christian Church.
