Our loving Wife and Mother was called to walk with the Lord today, February 6, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Phyllis Walters was born May 31, 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Kenneth and Mary Kay Olvey.
She was raised in Indianapolis where she graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1953.
From 1953 to 1967 she stayed at home and devoted her time to raising her four children.
In 1967 she moved to San Angelo Texas where she began her long and rewarding career at Goodfellow AFB. She received many honors during her civilian career including in 1988 wherein she was awarded Civilian of the Year for GAFB Technical Training Center for GS-7 and above. Then in 1991 she was recognized for being the ATC Base Budget Employee of the Quarter. In 1995 she won her highest and most proud honor and was named GAFB Civilian Woman of the Year for GS-7 and above.
After many “all nighters” closing her fiscal year budgets she decided to retire from Civil service in March of 1998. After moving to Weatherford she was not quite ready to fully retire so she took on a job at JC Penny’s in the jewelry department for five years and then worked at JD Crown Operating until a few weeks ago.
She was confirmed at Holy Angels Catholic Church in San Angelo and received her first communion. She was an active member of Saint Stephens Catholic Church in Weatherford.
She met the love of her life and married Lorenzo “Boats” Walters on March 11, 1976. They lived in San Angelo until they both retired and then moved to Weatherford Texas.
She was preceded in death by her Father, Kenneth Henry Olvey and her Mother Mary Kay Olvey.
She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Lorenzo Walters, along with five children, Steven Roy South and wife Rhonda of Milwaukie, Oregon; Kenneth Henry South and wife Giovanna of Dallas, Texas; Diane Kay Osborn and husband Jerry of Weatherford, Texas; Shari Lee Westbrook and husband Gary Gray of Weatherford, Texas; and Tony Eugene Walters and wife Elizabeth of Puyallup, Washington: Grandchildren, Stefanie Allison; Justin Westbrook; Jason Westbrook; Jacci Westbrook; Justin and Ciera Walters; and Elijah South: Great Grandchildren, Avery and Cooper. The family will receive friends at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in San Angelo at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Thursday at 2:00pm with a reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society on behalf of Phyllis Walters.
