Raymond N. George

Raymond George, age 81, passed from this life, Monday, April 1, 2019 at a Fort Worth Hospital. Raymond was born August 7, 1937 in Weatherford, TX to J. L. and Marguerite Wheeler George. He attended Mount Pleasant Colored School until 1953 and then IM Terrell High School, from which he graduated in 1956. He married Betty Jean Hawthorne on June 30, 1957 and they were blessed with 6 children.

He went to work for Southwestern Bell in 1957 and worked his way up to a Power Technician. He received the Top Award for Outstanding Results in the West District, Fort Worth. He retired after 40 years of service. He also played music professionally and taught guitar classes at Weatherford College and privately as well.

Raymond was a lifelong resident and leader in the Weatherford community where he served on several City committees and organizations. Raymond and his family were honored as the “Great American Family” for their service to the community and as role models for families and the youth in Weatherford. He served on the WISD School Board from 1980-1986 and received the Distinguished Service Award from the school district. He received the Weatherford Kiwanian of the Year Award in 1985-86. In early years, he and his late wife, Bettye, were presented a Proclamation recognizing “Raymond and Bettye George Day” by the Mayor of Weatherford. Raymond was the Chairman of the Mount Pleasant Colored School and over the past several years he worked diligently to restore the Mount Pleasant Colored School and the Prince Memorial Methodist CME Church, preserving a significant part of Weatherford’s history. In 2015, he was presented with his own street sign “Raymond George Way” which leads directly to the Mount Pleasant Colored School. Raymond was also presented a Proclamation recognizing “Raymond George Day” in 2016 and he was honored in 2018 with the Outstanding Citizen Award at the Chamber banquet.

He was a member of the Communication Works of America Union Chapter 6201, an active member of the NAACP, and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Raymond loved his family, playing golf, and he could always be found playing music. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 55 years Bettye George, and a son Darwin George.

Raymond is survived by his Daughters, Rosiland George of Mineral Wells, Andrea Carrington of Forney, Jennifer Williams of Keller, Sons, Anthony George of Brandywine, MD, Scotty George of Fort Worth, Brother, Clyde George of Kennedale, 11 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren, and a Special Friend, Doris Bailey.
