Michael Dennis Ratts, retired Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, passed from this life on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at the age of 79. Born July 11, 1943, in Weatherford, Texas, to Dennis C. Ratts and Mary (Huddleston) Ratts, Mike attended school in Weatherford as a child while his military father served overseas. He attended 17 different schools before graduating from Ramey High School, Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico.

Mike’s later educational mileposts included a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s degree from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Mike attended the Army Officers Candidate School, followed by a 20-year Army career that included service in the Vietnam War. His career, specializing in transportation and logistics, took him to eight locations, most notably Korea, Alaska, England, and Texas. He earned several commendations for his exemplary work.

Upon completion of his military career, Mike spent many successful years as a realtor in the Killeen, Texas, area, earning many top-sales awards. He later worked in property management.

Mike married Cheryl Johnson in 1969, and they had three children: Stephanie, born in Texas; Dennis, born in Alaska; and Michael, born in England. Although he and Cheryl divorced, they remained close until his death. Michael was a devoted father, always focused on his children. Though he was highly successful in many pursuits, his family was the highlight of his life; spending time with them was paramount.

Mike retired to Harker Heights, Texas, and later moved back to Weatherford to take care of his mother. He was a Master Mason in the local Phoenix Lodge 275 and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Weatherford. Over the years, he enjoyed hobbies that included reading, metal detecting, fishing, and watching western movies and British TV shows.

Mike’s death sparks true sadness but even more admiration for a life well lived. He was the epitome of a devoted father, and his children will miss most his selflessness and wisdom.

Left to honor Mike’s legacy are his sons, Dennis of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Michael of Weatherford, Texas. His daughter, Stephanie Grissom, preceded him in death four months before his own. He also left five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his uncle, Donald Huddleston; and his former wife, Cheryl Mees.

A memorial service honoring the life of Michael Dennis Ratts will be scheduled at a later date by Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.
