Richard Jelly Franklin Platt

May 25, 1922 — December 10, 2014

Richard “Jelly” Franklin Platt, 92, a loving husband, dad, Papaw and great grandpa, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014.
He was born on May 25, 1922, in Petrolia, Texas. After graduating from Petrolia High School, he served his country as a technical sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. He flew over 35 missions in the European theater, including German, Italy and France. After completing his military service, he returned home to Weatherford and married the love of his life, Dorothy Faye Scruggs, on April 10, 1945. He spent several years working at what he loved and was very gifted at auto mechanic work. In the 1950s, he began working for Brown and Root Construction Company. In 1965, he returned to Weatherford to care for his aging parents and start his own business with a fleet of gravel trucks. In the early 1980s, he retired and sold his trucking business and devoted his time to working on their 65-acre farm northwest of Weatherford that they purchased when they first married. They built their “dream” home in 1966 and have lived there since.
Faith and family have always been an important part of his life. He served as a deacon at North Side Baptist Church. He loved being involved in the lives of his family. His wit and humor was a bond between him and his family and everyone that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William B. and Mattie (Buck) Platt; two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include his wife of almost 70 years, Dorothy Platt, of Weatherford; children, Kay Mayo and husband, Randy, of Hamilton, Frank Platt and his wife, Lois, of Weatherford, Debbie Martin and husband, Mike, of Weatherford; 10 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. at North Side Baptist Church on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Side Baptist building fund.
