Richard Morgan Bowers

January 3, 1944 — May 28, 2022

Richard Morgan Bowers, 78, of Weatherford, Texas, passed away at home on May 28, 2022, with his wife and his sons by his side.

Born and raised in Irving, Texas to Duward and Opal Bowers, Richard developed a love for science and understanding how things worked from an early age. Before graduating from Irving High School where he played the trumpet in the school band, Richard earned his Eagle Scout rank. Richard attended Arlington College (later UTA) where he received his bachelor’s degree in Physics. He later completed his master’s degree at the University of North Texas and his PhD at Texas A & M Commerce.

Richard’s love for learning created a lifelong career and passion for him, starting with a year of teaching in public school, after which he began teaching at Weatherford College, where he served the students of Weatherford for 47 years. Many students learned to love and understand physics, science, and math under his patient and passionate teaching style. He served as Vice President of Weatherford College for several years until his retirement in 2016. As an acknowledgement of his service and excellence to Weatherford College and its students, he was named Vice President Emeritus.

Richard’s greatest pride was his family, who he also served with dedication, unending support, and love. Richard married Patricia Warren in 1968. As teenage sweethearts, Pat and Richard grew up together and more and more in love with each year. Their marriage was one between two best friends and soulmates. They made their home in Weatherford, Texas where Pat taught middle school English and served as the middle school librarian. Together they created a legacy of education and service to the community with a wide impact across the students they taught. Richard and Pat welcomed two boys into their family—David in 1971 and Gary in 1975. Although Richard had many accomplishments throughout his life, his greatest role was that of a father where he continued his acts of service to his children by selflessly teaching them and providing them every support that they would need as children and adults. His selfless example then extended to his daughter in-laws and grandchildren where he provided support and encouragement for any all endeavors chosen.

In addition to teacher, husband, father, and servant, Richard was also an adventurer. An avid scuba diver, pilot, and traveler, Richard and Pat visited every continent, but Antarctica, all 30 Major League Ball parks, and all seven wonders of the world. Travel was a way of connecting with the world and with people and creating memories with family that will be cherished.

Richard leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Pat Bowers; sons, David and his wife, Mandye, and Gary; grandsons, Christopher, Ryan, Evan, Aaron, Aidan, and Morgan; brother, Bill and his wife, Libby; nieces, Laura Brumfield and Rachael Saltenberger; and nephew, Brian Bowers.

In lieu of flowers, you can donate to the scholarship in his name at Weatherford College or to the American Cancer Society.
