S. D. Lunsford (known as “Dee”) was born March 22, 1929 in Mount Pleasant, Titus County, Texas, to Charles Edgar Lunsford and Hattie Lois Moon Lunsford. He married Martha Carolyn Short on her 18th birthday, April 19, 1953, at her parents’ home in Mount Pleasant. Dee passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016, 2016 at the age of 86.
After their marriage, Dee and Carolyn spent some years in San Antonio and then spent most of their life together in the Fort Worth area. Dee managed and owned landscaping businesses for a good part of his life. Among many projects he managed the planting of the trees along the entrance to DFW Airport. Along with his wife Carolyn, he served as a youth camp counselor, worked as a mission trip sponsor and taught youth Sunday School classes. Dee was involved in youth activities into his 70s. As a member of Sagamore Hill Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Dee took part in preparing the land for what is now Riverbend Retreat Center in Glen Rose, Texas. He leaves a strong legacy of involvement in youth activities. All of his grandchildren have been or are involved in working with youth, whether in church, school or other environments.
Dee was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, his son Sidney Dwayne Lunsford, his sister Bedie Lunsford Cook and brother-in-law James Earl Cook; brother Alfred Luke Lunsford and sister-in-law Luisa Grieco Lunsford, sister Gertrude Lunsford Rees and brother-in-law William Smith Rees, and brothers Leroy and C. C. Lunsford. He is survived by his sister-in-law Carolyn Kimbrough Lunsford, daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Jim Cagle of Prosper; daughter and son-in-law Valerie and Glen Nevil of Weatherford, daughter-in-law Sharon Moore Lunsford of Denton, seven grandchildren, three grandchildren-in-law and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral: 2:00pm Saturday, February 26, 2016 at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel. Interment Greenwood Memorial Cemetery. Ministers John Evans and Don Ross will officiate. Visitation: 6-8pm Friday, February 26, 2016 at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.
