Strength and dignity are her clothing and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
- Proverbs 31:25 -
Sally Ann Colgin Beard, 87, of Weatherford was called home to be with her savior Jesus Christ on June 25, 2023. She left this world peacefully, surrounded by her devoted family.
She was born May 19, 1936, in Weatherford, Texas to the late Andrew Russell Colgin and Linnie Arzella Buckner, both of Weatherford.
As a resident of Weatherford her entire life, she graduated with her lifelong classmates whom she cherished. She was crowned “Queen” of so many school programs (we always knew she was a queen). From Travis PTA to Melon Vine, Rodeo Day, Rainbow Worthy, and even prom queen. To say she was admired, respected and loved by all was an understatement. This admiration was reciprocated to those she attended school with and especially the Class of 1954.
Sally attended Southern Methodist University and graduated in 1957 from the Methodist Hospital of Dallas Nursing Program. She returned home to a nursing career that spanned more than 45 years. As a registered nurse, she served Parker County as the nursing supervisor at Campbell Memorial Hospital until she joined the Weatherford School District in 1977 as one of the first “school nurses”. (As Chuck would tell you, he never got to stay home or play sick!)
She retired in 2002 and spent her free time going to garage sales, antiquing, gardening, doting on her family, and spending as much time as possible on the back porch of her beloved home in Colorado. Her homes were always open to feed and care for those who would visit.
Someone once quoted, “A mother’s love is truly unlike any other. A friend who never leaves you, the one-woman fan club that supports your bold dreams (no matter how far-fetched they might seem) and your safe place to land at the end of the day.” Sally was the epitome of a mother’s love. She cared so selflessly for her children, Chuck and Laurie; her granddaughters Lauren and Katherine; her nieces, nephews, school children, friends, family and anyone who needed to feel the love that she so freely gave.
She was no stranger to sorrow and grief, losing her daughter early in life and her mother (her best friend) a year later. She was a woman of great faith and her cup was always half full. Her million-dollar smile brought joy to all who knew her. She was an active, lifelong member of the Central Christian Church which her grandmother helped to organize here in Weatherford. She loved the times spent with her church family and her Lord, Jesus Christ.
Sally lived with Alzheimer’s the last eleven years of her life. She battled the disease with the most amazing grace, bravery, and strength (no surprise there). The family would like to acknowledge, as she would if she could, those that truly made it possible to keep her in her home (her safe place) until her passing. To Rachael, Jade, Tonia, Jess, Teresa, Kimberly, Brenda, Samantha and all those at Alpha Omega Hospice - We are forever in your debt. You all became part of our family. We love you for your continued compassion, care, and support through it all.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles Beard; parents, Andrew and Linnie Colgin; brothers, Russell and George Colgin; daughter, Laurie Elizabeth Beard; and her best friends, Em Strickland and Betty George.
She is survived by her son, Chuck Beard and wife Melinda; granddaughters, Lauren and Katherine Beard; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Sally will be held from 6pm-8pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 10am on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Central Christian Church. She will be laid to rest in East Greenwood Cemetery in the presence of God.
