Samuel Alexander Barclay, III, age 81, peacefully transitioned from this life on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at his home in Aledo, Texas. Sam was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Dorothy Gill Barclay and Samuel Alexander Barclay, Jr.
He was a graduate of John Muir High School in Pasadena, California, and he received his bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Stanford University where he was studying law when he enlisted in Officer Candidate School and served five years in the U.S. Navy. Sam’s professional career spanned 33 years with Citibank where he served in various roles internationally and stateside.
Sam relished his time with family and friends and was fortunate to spend his retirement traveling with his wife, children and grandchildren, as well as reuniting with lifelong friends throughout the U.S. and abroad. One of those lifelong friends, Dave Castagna, may or may not owe Sam Barclay $5 (Stanford 24 / Cal 23).
Sam is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Sullivan Barclay; his son, David Barclay (Tiffany); his son, John Barclay; his two sisters, Susan Prescott and Elizabeth Barclay; his grandchildren, Daniel Asencio (Yannel), Brooke Barclay, Brett Barclay, Connor Barclay, and Reid Barclay; and his great grandson, Daniel “DJ” Asencio, Jr.
Sam was predeceased by his daughter, Virginia Valls.
A private memorial service will be held Friday, January 22, 2021. A celebration of life to include extended family and friends will be held in California at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by contributions to a charity of your choice, Doctors Without Borders, World Central Kitchen, or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
