Tom Johnson, 83, of Weatherford, passed away suddenly on Monday, February 12, 2018, at his home.

A memorial service to remember his life will be held at 2 P.M., on Tuesday, February 20th, at the First United Methodist Church, 301 S. Main Street, in Weatherford. Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 P.M., Saturday, February 17 at the Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 N. Elm Street, in Weatherford. An additional visitation will be held at the church from 1 P.M. until the time of the service, Tuesday. Burial will be held at 10:15 a.m., Friday, February 23, at 10:15 a.m. at DFW National Cemetery with Military Rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Weatherford First United Methodist Church Building Fund, Central Christian Church Music Fund, the Salvation Army, or to a charity of choice.

Tom was born on October 4, 1934, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to M.L. and Emily Johnson. He proudly served his country in the US Army where he earned his GED. Tom went on to study at TCU before finally obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin. As a true Renaissance man, Tom was well read in the literary classics, listened to classical music and enjoyed Opera. He was an avid historian and loved American, Texas, and Civil War History.

Additionally, Tom was a member of the Civil War Round Table. Tom had a love of horses and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and National Cutting Horse Association. Tom also enjoyed raising pure-bred Jack Russell Terriers. His horses, Black Angus cattle, and Jack Russel dogs can be found throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Tom will be remembered as being a mentor to many young people. He was a larger-than-life character who loved and cherished time spent with his family.

Tom is survived by his wife, Rachel, his son, Jeff, his daughter-in-law, Zaida, and grandchildren, Rowan and Maia Johnson. Tom is also survived by his siblings, Elsie (Clem) McGregor, Elva Wylie, Jerry (June) Johnson, and Johnny (Mary) Johnson ,and by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Frank, Mary, Lewis, Wanda, and Aileen, and by his close friends, Mary Jean McGraft, Col. Tony and Kathleen Skur, Dan McKee, and Gov. Lee Dreyfus of Wisconsin.
